I've been Minted! Otomi Wedding Set now available (!)

So excited to be able to post about this! I've been entering designs at Minted now and again- mostly for fun- but this one I was really excited about. Last year in October I went to Mexico with the husband for a little trip to a cute place outside of Cabo. And while walking around I found this little store that featured hand embroidered textiles of a local folk art called Otomi. They were sooooo beautiful (and I'm still kicking myself for not buying a ton of them!!) Anyways I took some photos and when I came back home I spent some time drawing images that were similar to what I had seen in those beautiful tapestries. The way I designed them I knew they weren't perfect for letterpress printing- so I decided to enter them into the Minted wedding design contest. Fast forward a few months and the best email arrived- I'd won! So now my lovely Otomi design is available in FIVE different color ways + a ton of options like different backing patterns. Plus all designs are available in the rsvp, direction, reception, envelope liners, thank you cards, and wrap around return address labels designs. So fun right? I'm really excited, and there is more to come! I've also won not ONE but TWO art competitions (!!) and soon small to large prints of some of my original paintings will be available.

It's like it's my birthday. or a late Christmas.

Either way I couldn't be more excited.

Custom note cards using vintage hand set type (and on not keeping our new year's resolutions, already...)

Hello, Happy 2014! So I guess my New Year's resolution of blogging more was blown before I even started since it's the 24th, and I'm just now getting to my first post of the new year... Whoops! Things are busy and already gearing up for all the Spring weddings. One thing that has kept us extra busy is our tiny Etsy store- Have you seen the custom note cards we offer there? They are lots of fun and make cute gifts. We make them by hand setting our collection of wood and metal type- the original and somewhat laborious way. Some of the type is chipped or warn, but we like that uniqueness and think it gives a quirky feel. We pair them with a recycled brown "paper bag" envelope and they fly out of the shop! Right now they are only available printed on our house paper (Crane's Lettra 110# Pearl White), and in our favorite 5.5" x 4.25" size, but we might expand this option in the future, what do you think? Custom quantities are available, but some names or words may not fit or be right for this type of printing, this isn't a font so not a lot of type sizes are available, feel free to contact us directly if you have a question or want a custom quote! Lots more exciting things to share in the new year, working on a new website, overhaul on our branding- and hopefully a physical move to our forever home (fingers crossed it's soon).

Scroll down to see some photos of what the metal and wood type look like.

You can see some of the individual make-ready we have to do to make each letter level with one another - vintage type is rarely all the same "type high" size.

Minted Save the Date designs

I've come up with a few ideas for the latest Minted contest for their "Don't Forget! Minted's Save the Date Challenge" If you have the chance to jump over and maybe give us a like or feedback on our current designs, I'd appreciate it! xo PS on a personal note I lived for a few years on Balboa Island, and the photo of the kids in the "she said yes" design are on the ferry from Balboa Island to the Newport Peninsula (unless I'm mistaken- but it looks like it!) So many good memories there, and still fun to visit when I go home! balboa-she-said-yes

Watercolored Summer Party Invitation, Menu, Bar card and Place cards

A little departure from all the letterpress projects... and I was able to break out my watercolors for this one!  I hand watercolored all the text and images, then scanned them, arranged them on the page and had them digitally printed on a 110# textured paper to give it that watercolor paper feel. The place cards were hand watercolored with the individual guests names after they were printed- right before everything was packaged and sent off to the client. It was a tight turnaround time, but I think it turned out pretty cute for a mid-summer champagne and lobster dinner party. Included below are a few close-ups of the actual watercolors before they were scanned and printed. So many words were painted! And I totally got hungry working on the menu... invite

Letterpress printed floral with watercolor LDS wedding invitation set

I had so much fun working on this wedding set, the bride to be wanted lots of flowers and different textures so I was able to integrate wood veneer, metallics, and most of all I hand watercolored all of the invitation cards before we printed them. (This was a little bit more of an undertaking than I had initially anticipated, but well worth it in the end!) This is also the first wedding set I have designed for someone getting married in a Mormon Temple, so I got to learn a lot about sealing ceremonies, ring ceremonies, etc... The Mormon Temple in Oakland is high in the Oakland hills and can be seen at night  (and during the day) from almost anywhere in the East Bay, so it was fun to know this was the destination for their family and friends. We used the 220# Lettra for the invitation (which worked surprisingly well for watercolor), and 110# Lettra for the direction, rsvp and sealing ceremony- the ring ceremony was printed on real wood veneer and the whole set was bound with a wrap imprinted with their initials and date. Vintage Map Save the Date

This save the date was designed to reflect the couples international travels all over the world. Each envelope was lined with a design from a vintage map, and the actual save the date shows a map of the Bay Area where the couple will have their ceremony.(sorry for the erased web address, I wanted to keep their wedding website just for guests!) All of our designs are custom and designed just for our clients, please let us know if we can design and print something for you! IMG_2241

Harabu House Website Design

Hello! I'm so excited to share this project with you. Let me start first by saying that I do not consider myself a website designer. I know little to nothing about programming, html and css are just letters to me. Luckily my client chose the talented group at Aeolidia.com to do all the "magic" programming side of things, and I was able to focus on the look and feel of the site.  I am really happy with the way it turned out, there are always compromises from the first idea to the final actualized design, but this one stayed pretty true to our original vision. Please visit www.harabuhouse.com and let me know what you think! And while you are there, enjoy the carefully curated objects that Shilpa has for sale, she has some really amazing finds.

Paper Monkey Press does Logo design too!

Yes, it's true- we do much much more than letterpress printing. Over the past few years we have done such varied projects as; Layout of catalogs (9-20 pages), numerous email blasts, brochures, white papers, business collateral systems, website design and logos. Lots and lots of logos. I really enjoy working with a client about to start a new business or with a company looking to update their current collateral system with an updated logo. Below are a few of our recent projects. Please let me know if you are interested in having us work on a new logo for you or your business- we have several different priced packages, depending on your needs.

Elle Decor Ad

Paper Monkeys aren't just limited to letterpress design you know... we do all sorts of design work. Here is an ad we did for the June 2011 Elle Decor. (that's Daisy on the sofa, isn't she the cutest?).We also did the logo for Nathan's line with Elite Leather.

Bookmark with "blind" printing

One of our most frequently requested services is for "blind" or no ink letterpress printing. Most clients seem to think this is somehow a less expensive process, when actually it costs the same as a regular run, and some presses understandably charge more, since the press has to be impeccably cleaned and the set up and registration is much trickier. That being said I too love the way it looks, and this project really lets the no ink run shine. This is a client designed project, brought to us for printing and I think it turned out just lovely. Printed on Pearl White 300 gram Crane's Lettra in a metallic gold and no-ink run.

Indian Fete Party Invitation

This was a really fun project to design and be a part of, one of my favorite clients Nathan Turner had a chance to travel to India for the online company One King's Lane, and to celebrate their trip, a fun Indian themed party was thrown.  I was given the inspiration that he planned on decorating with curtains of marigolds, so  I came up with this design and it was a huge hit. (We also did some little labels for gift candles, but I don't have any photos of those...).
